Title: Missing "Like" option.
Post by: infurl on January 12, 2020, 11:20:58 pm
Using Chrome I no longer seem to have the option to "Like" someone's post although the option to "Quote" from a post is still there in the dropdown menu that you get on posts when you are signed in. I wondered if the user interface had changed in my absence or I had misremembered it.

I just tried signing in to the site using Firefox instead, and the "Like" option is right there where it should be. It seems there is a bug in Chrome which is interfering with it. I'm using the latest versions of both browsers on the latest version of MacOS. Has anyone else noticed a problem like this?

I use Chrome (in Windows) and successfully "Liked" your post from the drop-down menu.

Chrome is also working for me.

I took a closer look using the Javascript debugger. It's a problem with the way that Javascript widgets from addthis.com are being accessed. They are being requested as .php files instead of .js files which conflicts with the MIME type. In Firefox, the Javascript console displays a warning that it is loading the file anyway, but in Chrome which is more secure to the point of paranoia (except where your privacy is concerned, thanks Google), it just says nuh-uh.

This could either be a bug in the scripts being supplied by addthis.com or it could be a bug in PHP or its configuration, or neither. Ladies and gentlemen, place your bets.

Edit: I liked everyone's posts using Firefox.

Edit2: Back in Chrome again, there is now an Unlike option on the posts that I just Liked, but there is still no Like option anywhere.

Infurl,

I seem to recall having this same or very similar issue some years back and while it escapes me as to the crux of the problem, I am now logged in using Chrome (which I never use) and have the option to UNLIKE any posts to which I have previously LIKED and I am also able to add a LIKE to any post to which I have yet LIKED.

I do have my A/V "anti-tracker" enabled as well as Start Page but nothing out of the ordinary otherwise.

I was hoping Freddy will weigh-in on this as he was able to figure it out the last time this happened (I think).

I know people who would PAY to have that option for FACEBOOK when everyone is forever telling everyone to LIKE, COMMENT & SUBSCRIBE!
They should  consider installing an UNLIKE Button!! (give it a rest people!! You know who you are...it was a JOKE!!)...

Is this still an issue?

I am using Chrome and the likes are working okay. Is Chrome up to date, are you running any ad blockers or something like that?

Thanks Freddy, you nailed it. I've disabled my ad blocker for this site. I've been using an ad blocker for so long I didn't even know you had ads here.

No problem  O0

I don't think we have any ads now, I used to block them for Trusty Members anyway. From looking in the Chrome console it looks like they are associated with the AddThis sharing buttons. You did mention that might be the problem. I don't see anything appearing anywhere though.

The sharing buttons are quite useful so if you are good to go then I will leave this for now. Maybe in the future I will write some code for our own sharing buttons.

The Like feature is gone again for me at least.

It disappeared for me when I started using ad blocking and disabling ad blocking for this site enabled "Like" to start working again. It's a quirk of the Javascript library that's in use. Since there are not ads on this site (and never will be on my watch either) it's safe to disable ad blocking. What browser and version are you using?

I installed Ad- Blocker (red shield with "ABP" with a line through it) and lost the like option as well. The previous one (talk to the hand, red octagon) wasn't causing any issues. You could try that one.

I'm using AdBlock Plus without any problems though as I mentioned, I do have to turn off ad blocking for this site. Maybe we should compile a list of ad blockers that do or don't interfere with the site and pin it.

Maybe... But (I’m guessing) there are so many potential variables, that it would be difficult to make a complete list that worked for everyone, and keep it updated. It might be best to just write a quick statement in the Help tab, about adblockers possibly interfering with some site functions such as the ''Like'' option.

Yes you're quite right. That's good clear thinking on your part.  :)
