XV-11: Neato Robot Vacuum or Roomba Killer?
The XV-11 aims to be both. It's a
new robot vacuum that hopes to
challenge the Roomba. While the two robots look superficially similar,
they take very different approaches to their work. Camp Peavey, who
works at Neato Robotics,
writes,
Silicon Valley has a contender!
"Neato Robotics" has just announced the XV-11. Available First Quarter
2010. This robot uses a laser rangefinder (Room Positioning System) to
SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) its environment; allowing
the XV-11 to bound the perimeter of a room and then methodically clean
the interior with straight lines avoiding obstacles along the
way.

approach to robotics, in which intelligent,
life-like behavior emerges from layers of very simple behaviors. The
XV-11, on the other hand takes a very traditional hard-AI approach that
involves building internal representations of its environment using
laser rangefinders and SLAM. So while a vacuuming Roomba
looks like a
wandering insect, the XV-11 looks more like the Terminator, taking a

Actually the Samsung Hauzen / Furot II, employ a camera that maps the ceiling of each room. It can recharge when needed then go back to its previous position and continue. It is a bit pricey at around $500 - 600 USD.
The good side is that it doesn't waste time bouncing off walls with a random pattern like so many do.
The European Karcher built floor robot is also quite adept at cleaning and it empties itself in a hopper that's built into it's charging station. Of course I believe this bot will set one back around $800 - 1000 USD.
Of course, Dyson is also getting into the act although it's machine does not exhibit the low, sleek profile of the other bot types. It too, is a bit up there in the price department.
Let's face it...they all SUCK!! (or at least let's hope so) :D

Of course if money was not an issue AND you needed to do routine vacuuming anyway AND you found that they worked great AND saved you the monotonous task, I dare say you'd have one! ;D
I too have NOT hit the lottery and find the $600 USD price tag on the steep side even if it does suck dust bunnies from under the bed!
Imagine however, with all the robotic gadgets, innovations, home automation, robomowers, etc., we'll get fatter and lazier while the machines do our bidding! You days could basically be spent playing online games!
Gads...still need the dreaded (JOB) to pay for the electric to run these mechanical marvels! OK...maybe it's not quite as great as I envision it...yet!

These robot vacuums are pretty expensive so i've been seeing if their are cheaper ones available, i looked on ebay and did find some cheap but they lack some major features which i really need like self recharging and have read reviews on these and found a number of problems.
The best one i found was a robot vac with virtuall wall and self charging again these are quite pricey even on ebay but managed to find a website that does it cheaper than anywhere else.

i'm done with monotonus chores, this will vacuum while i'm at work then charge itself and vacuum again and when i get back my carpet will be super clean. cool!
