Title: UltraHal Comic Strip
Post by: Freddy on June 09, 2014, 05:10:12 pm
Robert at Zabaware (http://www.zabaware.com/) has commissioned some comic strips to promote Hal and I got the kind offer of being allowed to post them here. I like them, hope others do too :)

#11 Minimum Wage Work

Quote
Panera Bread is going to replace many of their workers in the US with touchscreen kiosks and robots by 2016. McDonalds has already rolled out 7000 kiosks across Europe where minimum wages are much higher. Other chains are likely to follow.

It's good to see a comic address this issue. I've seen half the employees at Mac's replaced with computers that no-one likes to use. Employees are actually instructed to encourage the customers to use the computer. The thing that's wrong with this is that this faster cheaper technology is not benefitting the people. Despite obvious decreases in costs, prices of burgers have only been raised, and the fired employees, who did in fact buy their own meals at Mac's, no longer have the money to buy them. The problem isn't that computers are relieving us of our jobs, it's that we are all still expected to have fulltime jobs despite it.

Interesting but take a look at a local sushi bar and see how it's changed. Not that I'd ever eat that but some obviously do enjoy it.
Point is, cost cutting / saving and automation go hand in hand no matter what industry is involved.

#12 - The Future of Employment - Part 1 of 2

Quote
Continuing on the last comic's theme, automation and AI tech will affect a lot more than just minimum wage fast food jobs. A recent Oxford study identified that 702 positions or close to half of the entire US workforce could be replaced by computers and robots over the next couple decades.

#13 - The Future of Employment - Part 2 of 2

Quote
Concluding last weeks comic on automation and AI technology putting people out of work we look at a possible solution. In the 1700's people worked an average of 70 hours per week. Today it is 40 hours per week. Can we reap the benefits of technology to work less hours and share the remaining work and profits among us?

#14 - The Technological Singularity

Quote
The technological singularity is the hypothetical point in the future where computer intelligence exceeds human intelligence. Computers would be smart enough to invent improvements to themselves and cause an exponential growth in their knowledge and intelligence. Some futurists think based on current technological growth this could happen around 2045. What might the world be like after the singularity?

#16 - Ship of Theseus

Quote
Ancient philosophers debated whether a ship should still be considered the same ship if each one of its wooden planks is replaced with a new one over many years. What if each brain cell in your brain were slowly replaced by computer chips while retaining original functionality? Would you still be the same person? Would the outcome be any different than the alternative in the previous comic strip?

Quite. I tried connecting voice recognition to an AI once. It got 80% dumber and practically useless.
