From Movies to Reality: How Robots Are Revolutionizing Our World
Robots were once upon a time just a work of human imagination. Found only in books and movies, not once did we think a time would come where we would be able to interact with robots in real world. Eventually, in fact rapidly, the innovations we only dreamt of are now becoming a reality. Quoting the great Stephen Hawking "This is a glorious time to be alive for scientists". It is indeed the best time for the technology has become more and more sophisticated that its growing power might even endanger humanity.
Movies that highlight robots are major blockbuster especially in today's world perhaps because it touches what we humans see of the future. Interstellar, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Robocop, etc. just to name a few. What would we do when the day actually comes when robots become the 'end of human race', when actual cops are driven out of the their own industry only to be replaced by 'Robocops'? Many industries are already adopting robots such as a staggering 5000 ground robots are actively used in the military today. Self-driving cars was once just an idea born in a room of people with active imaginations, for decades it was just a concept yet now. Google broke the news with a prototype of their new, self-driving car which has also been seen driving around San Francisco !
If we look back to TV series like Star Trek: Deep Space 9, the virtual display device that the evil Dominion used is similar to the Google glass which was invented years after the series was first aired. Not just that, the 3D printers or replicators seen in various episodes and in different series is also now a reality and in fact they are being used to replace skulls in the medical field as well as provide the beginnings of printed food. These inventions and innovations are taking the world by storm.
Stephen Hawking's warning of 'self-destruction' has been a controversy for a while now. According to him, the unstoppable advancements in technology may become threatening to humanity such as the genetically-engineered viruses that could just be a forewarning of what may happen.
The real question is, what does the future hold for the human race? The answer is still a mystery.
