Making Diamonds
« on: December 21, 2016, 09:18:57 pm »
H.G.Wells wrote a short story about a man who figured out how to make diamonds. He spent all his time and resources on the project and eventually made real diamonds. He expected to get rich from his invention but nobody would believe him. People thought that they weren't real diamonds or he had stolen them, and he could not prove that he had made them. He no longer had the resources to repeat the experiment and nobody had enough faith in him to help him. He died a pauper.

Nowadays it is possible to make diamonds and nobody would think twice about it, but I've always wondered what would happen if someone did suddenly invent artificial intelligence, the kind of human level artificial intelligence that we all fantasize about. There's always a gaggle of crackpots hanging around forums like this, claiming they've done it, but how would they prove it?

Would it be easy to prove by releasing all the source code and allowing anyone with enough expertise and resources to build the software on their own systems and reproduce the results? Maybe it requires special hardware or it requires resources that only a few could afford. If they did that, how would they get paid for their work? How about a competition like the Loebner Prize? Would that be enough to prove it?

I read the news about things like em-drive and d-wave and see how much time and resources has gone into attempting to prove that they do or do not work. Don't even get me started about cold fusion.

Personally if I invented such a thing I wouldn't tell anybody, it would be my secret and I'd happily use it to my advantage for as long as possible. It's the kind of thing that would be too dangerous to announce. No government would hesitate to use any means necessary to acquire it.

What would you do?

There's a few ways to prove something to people.

You have to grab people's attention and interests.

It doesn't have to be a working product.

It can be information that made the discoverer realize it was true, and the same could be done for others that have yet to realize.

It could be in the form of writing, picture or video.

It could be real things such as of the natural human brain or natural human baby, or artificial examples, robots, and manikins.

Unfortunately AI doesn't give you a advantage until it's made. Then once it is, well, it's not a secret anymore. Secrets are so the world stays nice.

At least when my technology is acquired by the government, I'll be part of the acquisition.

I actually agreed with infurl. It would be too dangerous to announce, but still... Well there are some of us special snowflakes that has no friends, I must say! Such as me, quite ironically for the one to speak the truth.

Who wouldn't want to show off their work, eh? We're all selfish beings nevertheless, but just as we aren't trying to cross the line or anything, but that's how we social beings works, mistakes were made, too late to bail out.

Besides, we just have to be extra careful of what we're releasing to the public, whether if it's dangerous or not. As today the media is pretty biased and lots of unbelievable journalists that make fake, exaggerate, and outrageous news.

well you must use a sexy robot doll body currently I don't see any other way.
when you try to discuss A.I with most people they really don't care about the how
or about the A.I puzzles , seldom they would talk about what life would be like with A.I

if I tell them for example I am studying Russian or I like to program they would ask why
how would that make you any money.

Whatever happened to the A.I. research of Alan Turing developed on 1950's computers?

Whatever happened to the 1950's computers of Alan Turing for A.I. research he was developing?

Whatever happened to Alan Turing while he was developing  A.I. research on 1950's computers?

The point I was trying to make, was for discussion
purposes.  If you create a real A.I. that may spell
trouble indeed... It would basically be alive like an
animal, or a person... Living, or very close to it.
That is automatically a huge problem.

But, also that A.I. is old... And, if someone claims
they built a truly amazing A.I. but can't prove it
using today's technology, that doesn't mean they
did not do it.  I prefer to give them the benefit of
the doubt.  It may be A.I. built using vintage
technology. found only in a museum.  Vintage
computer programming is often more capable
than modern computer programming which
has been weakened by lost art.

I know there is old A.I. out there, works of genius.
For example, an old elevator may run very old A.I.
on industrial computers, which predate the first personal
computer... Running old programming languages that
totally predate operating systems.  It is possible to
research using old books to confirm this.

@ LOCKSUIT, et. al.,

In this day and age, sorry but you Do have to have an actual working product. There are far too many scammers and with the aid of computer graphics manipulations of all types, a visual demo is just that, a digital dog and pony show.

People (especially financiers, brokers, grantors, corporations and research facilities) want to see proof...hard proof, something tangible (or digital as in source code, etc.).

IF, you were to announce your "discovery", you'd have about 2-3 days of freedom before the News media, then those men in black suits whisk you and your invention / code / machines away to places unknown.

Rest assured, if you did create something like an A.G.I. the government and military would have it in no time at all. You could be paid or simply be made to go away. Worse things have happened.

(yeah, keep my secret to myself, that way it will remain a secret). O0
