Aphantasia and what it means for AI
« on: December 23, 2017, 12:52:18 am »
I knew I had something that would belong in this new board stowed away in my browser bookmarks.  Well, I found it.  This is an article written from the perspective of a guy who has aphantasia -- the inability to mentally visualize (or auralize, or ...) anything.  The average person can both directly recall sensory experiences and imagine new ones; he can't do either.  (He also has some problems with his episodic memory, which may or may not be related.)  Swear warning: https://m.facebook.com/notes/blake-ross/aphantasia-how-it-feels-to-be-blind-in-your-mind/10156834777480504/

I'm particularly interested in his descriptions of a) how he dreams, in the rare event he does and b) how he fantasizes.  His dreams and imaginings are strings of concepts and plot points, rather than internal movies.  That's how Acuitas (who doesn't even have senses) would have to dream or imagine things.  The fact that there are a handful of humans who also seem unable to do it any other way gives me more confidence that the idea's viable.
