What Three Words?
« on: August 06, 2018, 03:58:56 am »
The Three Words that might soon define where you or anyone you know lives.

It seems that some very creative (?) folks have come up with a unique method of identifying one's location without resorting to GPS. Rather, one's location in this instance refers to a physical structure as opposed to one's personal whereabouts.

They have established a huge gridwork and within this grid are assigned various names, usually unrelated and totally different, without rhyme nor reason.

They're much worse than those old two unrelated words that Compuserve or AOL used to require users to memorize in order to log in to their online presence many years ago. In fact, many devices including some modems still resort to using two unrelated words and perhaps a couple of numbers thrown into the mix as well.

No matter...in order to find out these THREE WORDS to pinpoint your home, apartment, flat, business, campground, etc., just enter www.what3words.com. If you enter whatthreewords.com, they'll fix it for you...no worries.

You already have a Zip or Postal Code and usually some type of address whether house or box so this isn't any different or more invasive.
One thing that some have said is that not everyone else knows where you live and some also suggest that you remain somewhat guarded about your new Three Words...unless you don't care who knows where you live. Your choice.

You've been warned.

I want a way to make an account with the service and assign words using a scheme unique to that account, so I can pass locations in code to other people who have the login.

As a universal standard for indexing locations, it seems a little unnecessary. Addresses are an adequate way of locating homes and other structures, and we have latitude+longitude for everything else. I do suppose it's easier to memorize three words than a pair of coordinates to many decimal places ... but I'm not sure when you would need that.
