Cat recognises self in mirror
« on: December 03, 2018, 05:37:41 pm »
Occasionally we will see that only a few animals are regarded as self aware, I think elephants and apes are the main ones, but I don't think cats usually get mentioned in the same breath.

Here's a cat that seems to have worked out it was itself in the mirror and that those were his ears!

Free likes       not fair

Did you actually forget this was already posted by korrelan? Seriously, did you forget? Who else forget in fact? I knew very well, in fact I don't think I'd forget about it for many years.

Glad you did post it Freddy...  (Thanks again to Korrelan!)

I hadn't realized forum support for video embedding was this wide.

Besides, more likely, the cat has mistaken its reflection for a mouse.

I added a like because it’s an excellent video, no matter how many times it’s posted.

If the cat thought it was a mouse or another cat it would attack the reflection, there is something else going on here…

An unintended consequence of human natural selection of house pets? We make choices on which animals to keep and breed, looks and temperaments influence this. It's probably not that cut and dry. I bet that subconsciously we're selecting for human like traits, we just call it looks and temperaments. I bet those concepts are self biased, rather than perfectly objective. Man, I'm so proud of that cat though! It would be a shame if it's neutered.

I agree and I have also seen the young cats arching their back after seeing its reflection in a closet mirror then hissing and prancing around, thinking it had been seeing another cat instead of itself.

Different breeds might just beget different abilities. Who knows for sure in this age...well I'm sure there are some animal researchers tucked away in a lab somewhere.  O0
