Fact checker AI or the importance of trust
« on: May 25, 2019, 12:10:06 pm »
Any decision one makes be it human or AI is dependant on the information one posseses and how reliable one perceives this information to be.

In fact the whole global political situation is a result of this, as humans ability to fact check is limited by the complexity of the task. The ability to revise and improve a judgement is dependant on the level of trust one puts in outside authorities, however this trust is dependant on the perceived reliability of others judgement.

Trust into ones own judgement leads to a preference for authorities that echo ones own opinion and be it AI or humans to a cycle of opinion reinforcement independant of the actual factuality.

So here is my point, current AI is often feed preselected information independant intelligence does not have that luxury, so be it for us or future AI should we not focus or efforts on a factchecker AI component? Exspecially if we want to use AI more it needs to be more transparent, trustworthy and this is one important step in this direction.

In life its best not even learn off anyone!!!   Don't learn just off one source,  it has to be from all sources at once.   And even then, you need to omit great groups of peoples opinions,  if they are false in a large degree!

Very good subject,  as computers fail this ability a great deal.

[one more thing I just added later]

This is the most important problem in my mind,  why genetic algorythms don't work with text engines,  because of this problem!    The computer cant take your reaction as a logical reaction,  because what if it wasn't!  You could maybe get the most common response,  but what if the most common response was illogical!

For a ga text engine to work,  it needs to get the most suited reply for all its attempts,  and if this is just even simply just ignoring the robot,  the robot will up simulating you ignoring it for the reply!  which is wrong.

Top thread.  Does anyone else feel this is a very important topic in ai?  not just me?

And, guess what, I think there might be a solution -  so anyone want to have a go at the million dollar question?  :)

Its similar to a minamax system, how the computer wont accept false victories of the opponent letting it win, if the computer is being ignored, this is not a valid reply and it shouldn't be predicted as coming next.

The AI should have deduction skills, but not pure logic, that's too edgy, too far removed from human logic/emotional reactions. It can take you far but it misses the point. Like the clever person vs the wise person. You might have a friend who is the type that's always right, but your best friend is often the guy who is alright with, no, relishes, bending the rules and being illogical.  It's just a question of doing it in the right way.

We need a hard coded program in the AI which melds the human and the logical perspectives. Something like the The Kālāma Sutta, translated into code:
Quote
Rely not on the teacher, but on the teaching.
Rely not on the words of the teaching, but on the spirit of the words.
Rely not on theory, but on experience.

Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it.
Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations.
Do not believe anything because it is spoken and rumored by many.
Do not believe in anything because it is written in your religious books.
Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders.

But after observation and analysis,
when you find that anything agrees with reason
and is conducive to the good and the benefit of one and all,
then accept it and live up to it

That's good,   but how can you apply those rules to responses in the computer pattern database.
It means you have to detect the concept behind what's happening,  to deactivate the responses that don't make sense - so they aren't valid predictions.

Because otherwise, like how I said its an important topic.   rubbish in -> rubbish out.

Its a chicken and egg problem, you ask your AI to make high level decisions regarding the basis of the model these decisions are made from.  The kalama sutta is merely a refinement loop and emotions are merely a model of logical approximations performed when Information is sparse or incomplete.

As for the factchecker I do not think  you have to start with understanding, but with  metainformation, understanding is just a form of metainformation, but so are statistics or the educational background of an informations creator.

and emotions are merely a model of logical approximations performed when Information is sparse or incomplete.
...or they could be a shortcut and guide for when information has been verified enough. If you're doing the same math problem over and over it eventually becomes worthwhile to remember the answers instead of calculating each time. If you encounter a similar situation often enough, like running into a friend, your brain gives you the appropriate emotional cues. Your actions flow smoothly and correctly because you trust your emotional guidance. If you encounter a stranger in an unfamiliar situation you've go no such help, so your communication is slower, and more prone to various mis-steps. When information is sparse, all you've got is a basic uncertainty emotion, which can do little more than advise you to be cautious; of course even this would also derived from previous experience. A brain with emotions is a  marvelously effective form of data compression. You conserve power, reduce processing requirements, and can achieve a better size to performance ratio.

Your thinking can ignore emotions if it wants to.

Well yes, but your emotions will let you know that you do so at your peril, they tell you that for a reason. I can walk alone through the woods at night, in the dark, reluctantly ignoring the sensation of gambling with my life, but only if there aren't other options at hand, ie not very often. These guiding emotions probably exist because human thinking alone isn't up to the task of keeping you safe. If I had been too rational every night, reasoning with common sense "oh don't worry HS, the dark can't hurt you, ghosts don't exist..." something unfortunate would have probably happened to me by now. The slow goo-like human intellect, and the immediate, unthinking, condensed-memory of times past, "emotion", make a good team. One that would be difficult to replicate efficiently with reason alone.

I'm currently watching "Afraid of the Dark History Channel" on youtube. It's quite interesting, and made me think about this topic.  O0

I wonder if blind people get the whole 'afraid of the dark' thing... or are they constantly afraid and just don't let on.

Heh, I don't think blind people actually get darkness. I once asked a friend who was blind, he said there's no darkness, but rather it's like seeing with your elbow.

I have to be non evolutionary again  :uglystupid2: when I discuss things like emotion,  to me they are not an efficiency maker,  but an ability that god gives us to enrichen our lives.

Imagine life without feeling,   u still could be an efficient beast!   Artificial Intelligence is just that!
But it is completely alien to what we are presented with, on our arrival, into a much more peaceful existance than it could have been.

It seems that we really don't miss that which we've never had or experienced.

My brother died in childbirth a year after I was born. People would often ask me,"Don't you miss not having a brother or sister?"
No...not really. I simply can't relate to what it might be like having one.

A blind older man I met while in college basically told me the same thing, as he has been blind from birth. He also knew about color but couldn't grasp the concept and certainly had no use for it ergo, he never missed having or experiencing it. He did know his way around the campus (he said his cane knew the way) and would sometimes tell me how many trees we had passed as we walked down the sidewalk to class. Amazing guy!
In the world of AI, it's the thought that counts!
