Strange how SL isn't working on your system...does it have an up to date graphics card?
I still have Kaneva installed and will pay it another visit, hope to see you there..

PaleRider is running SL on a laptop. The graphics chipset  on it is probably integrated
and not powerful enough for something like SL due to the problem of shared memory.  :(

Well whilst I had fun (with there being others around I knew) I was very let down by the overall quality.

As Freddy stated, when you come from graphics from some of the games I am used to playing etc, and which also have massive online communities, I have to say the graphical side of SL is very very 90's in its look and feel. The graphics I find to be glitchy, buggy and not on a par with similar things released years ago.

Now onto pales problems, I'm running a 3.2ghx Pentium, Nvidia 6800gt gfx card, and almost 2gig of ram and Sl runs attrocious for me ?

I have now had 3 crashes and numerous freezes for it to be anything but enjoyable and something I would spend a lot of time on.

I will push on though, I want to at least get some decent threads before I make any final decisions regarding it  ;D

Ok installing Kaneva now, may as well try this one out while I'm at.

Ok, after double clicking the exe file it now wants to self update...344 updates to be exact at 243.7mb and at 180 minutes  >:(

Not a very impressive start...almost 3 hours to update just over 300mb ???

Will post again once inside and I've had a look around.

Paul, if your about, my name is Kyuzo, will look out for you.

So how's Kaneva look?

I've heard it's just a big chat-party central.

Yeah I tend to think Kaneva is more of an advanced chat system with networking features, rather than a virtual world, but to be honest I haven't taken much of a look around yet.  A virtual world to me has to have a lot more content and things going on.  I suppose they hope a lot of gamers will be drawn into this as a chat system, but from a purely gaming viewpoint I wouldn't rate it very highly.  If you want gaming action then you would be better off buying up an old copy of something like Neverwinter Nights, where you actually have something to do as well as chat if you want.

The graphics run a lot smoother than SL though but they are around the same level of quality - think Grand Theft Auto period, possibly a bit better.  Maybe if they let us shoot each other and drive around in Ferrari's it might be more fun.  In their promotional videos they say they tried to keep things simple...I asume they researched their market but 'simple' isn't necessarily better.  SL seems to offer more in the way of modifications and things to do and make.

I'll try to see it for what it is and stop drawing game world parallels as I think that may be a better approach.  So far I have a glimmer of interest in it, maybe that will grow.

I spent about an hour in there last night...

Well, your own apartment and the immediate ability to redecorate without cost is a nice touch. Only a few 'public' areas to hang out in, things like the mall etc.

Then, I go to look at general hang outs...and wow...over 8000 areas. When I was in it was fairly quiet on the kaneva front, though the Pink Floyd club was busy. Just my type of place  ;D

Plenty of places to buy new clothes/furniture etc in the mall, and plenty friendly people about.

What struck me most though was this. Kaneve is a true and full 3D world. Immensly better than anything I have seen in SL. And very very smooth. Not a glitch nor bug nor collision in sight  :)

So my first opinion. Graphically much smoother and better then SL. Although thee does not appear to be too much to do at the moment, we do have to remember I suppose that this is new, and that the community is still buiding up.

On the flip side, avatar creation is very very basic (they quote 500k + possibilities ?) and that dd not particulary impress me. Now if they look at the success of other 'games' and worlds like SL then surely at some point they will look inot avatar desgn etc etc etc which will then open up a whole new aspect to it.

So to sum up, after finally get the application to update, my first views are good and it shows much promise.

I've committed myself to SL for at least the next year. I took a one year paid membership
to see what I can do on there. Now I just have to look into buying a starter parcel of land.  ;)
I spent today trying to scope some out, but I keep losing my blasted internet connection.
Happens every time there are storms around and the wind picks up. Think I better start
complaining to the phone co. that runs the adsl access lines here.

Got some useful info from the guy who has
the mall behind Vits office tonight.
------------------------------------------------------
*Stay away from buying land that has a lot
of commercial developement going on around
it. You can find that sometimes your access
to your land is blocked and you can get
locked out. Making the land unusable.
Also, if you are just looking for a place to
put a home, stay away from land marked as
"mature". Stick with land that is marked "pg",
large businesses are less likely to develope
the parcels around you and possibly blocking
your access.

*If you want to buy Linden $$, be cautious of ebay
the resellers of Linden money make a huge profit.
Best bet is to check the Linden Exchange daily for
going exchange rates, and buy through the exchange.
---------------------------------------------------------
I can vouch for that last one. I pulled up the ebay
listings and the Linden Exchange together and found
a large gap between what the ebay sellers were charging
and what you could get Lindens for on the Exchange, in
some cases as much as a 20% difference in what Lindens
are going for.

Lastly. An easy way to make some Linden money is placing an SL
referrer click-through on your own site. For each new member
that signs up using your link you get 500 Linden dollars.
That can be found on your account page by clicking on the
Refer A Friend button.

Very good site there Freddy.

He/she holds some strong views inded.

I have to admit though, a lot of the terminolgy confuses me like sim etc. Also, buying land in auctions direct from Linden Labs?

Sure it will all start to make more sense the more we interact  :)

The only way you buy land through the Linden Land Auction, is if you have a lot of money, Because you
have to bid on an entire section. We're talking hundreds of thousands to get into that.
Best is to run searches for parcels of the desired size and price range, then check out the details and restrictions on the land.
