Spirit Completes its Mission on Mars
6 June 2011, 12:05 pm

After 6 years NASA and JPL officially declared the retirement of Spirit Mars Rover, one of the two robots that landed on Mars in 2004. Both are extremely successful, Spirit lasted more than 6 years instead of the planned 3 months and covered 12 times the distance it was meant to. The other one, Opportunity is still operational. The solar powered Spirit couldn’t overcome another Martian winter and after many trials the mission has ended. Both rovers are two of the most successful ever used in space exploration and they have made massive contributions to our scientific knowledge of Mars. You can read more about Spirit’s retirement or visit the vast gallery of images and other info at NASA’s website.
