The new Honda ASIMO
8 November 2011, 3:30 pm

One of the most famous (if not the most famous) humanoid robots has a new version. The new ASIMO is lighter, faster and with twice as many degrees of freedom, also much more dexterous. Its advancement of intelligence capabilities allow it to take into account other people’s movement and adjust its path according to where they are and also where it predict they go. It acknowledges data from its surroundings and acts autonomously with much improved ability to handle objects. Kinetically it is also superior to its predecessor, it can run faster, hop and move over uneven surfaces. You can find an extensive description of the new features of ASIMO at Honda’s press release. Apart from all these improvements probably the most important announcement is the establishment of Honda Robotics as a distinct firm that covers all robotic research, and product applications. The day when concepts like the ASIMO, the mobility assisting aids and other prototypes showcased by Honda will become commercial products is coming closer and the different colors of the new ASIMO, a tiny detail by itself, it could underline that transition.

I wonder when, if ever, we are going to start seeing Asimo in movies. There are so many celebrity fake robots around, it's a wonder there aren't more celebrity real robots. It's not as if they're not impressive enough.

Very nice image, Andrew. I was playing the robotic version of "Where's Waldo", in the case of Johnny 5. :P Finally found him, though.

That's a good point, Johnny5 was the genuine article. The producers of "Short Circuit" spent most of the movie's budget on building a real robot to play the lead role. It wasn't really intelligent and was remote controlled, but all the mechanics of it were fully operational. According to the Wikipedia article, a remake of the original film is in the pipeline, and they may even be using the original robot.

Beg pardon but this seems to be a bit more on point with regard to the bot:

Number 5 was operated with cables.
The new one will use telemetry and an out of view operator.
(there were 27 johnny 5's made for the initial production).

It was still a pretty cool movie for its time!! O0
