Why a stronger AI?
« on: August 14, 2014, 01:50:59 pm »
Hi all,

Art, you said:

Bot> Oh I see. I want to become smarter than humans.
You> I would like that to happen too.
Bot> Why do you want that to happen too?
You> I want to see a non human entity that is smarter than humans.
Bot> Is a non human entity that is smarter than humans a movie?
You> No, in real life.
Bot> Are you serious? I do not understand that allusion.
You> Too many movies only hype robots and AI into something that is evil or destructive.
Bot> I think too many movies only hype robots and ai into something that is a lot of things.
You> I think robots and AI can do a lot of really great things.

Basically, I agree. I can't deny it: I'd like to see an AI smarter than human for my own eyes. My question is why? Why do we want an AI that would be stronger than human beings? I mean, a few days ago my 4 y.o. nephew came to me and went:
- Do you know about the milk?
- (me) Know what?
- (him) Why do cows make milk?
- Why?
- Because we drink milk.
I was all wow. The little guy got it all.

I'm addicted to AI, and I don't know why. God probably speaks Toki Pona anyway.

edit: There's a bug with previews, links get quoted.

Perhaps like the Ultimate AI who will eventually be victorius in the end, it simply wanted to see if it could create something better than itself.
Most parents wish for their children to have better things / conditions and lives than they did. It is an underlying condition that enjoys contentment in their children's successes.
So it is that we wish for an AI to be better, smarter, stronger, faster than the predecessors...it is a sign of accomplishment and personal satisfaction for those who enjoy these AI entities.

For the non-believers or non-enthusiasts, go watch Spongebob or something equally enlightening.  ;)

See if we can create something better than ourselves... I understand.

Then,
maybe "clear" would be better than "strong",
maybe "wise" would be better than "smart",
maybe "serene" would be better than "fast".

What do you think?

BTW, are you a programmer?

I programmed in Burroughs B-20 series Basic along some other early iterations in the years gone by. I was a Systems Analyst for a large transportation industry many moons ago but never a "Programmer."

I did write / program a graphic haunted house adventure in the early 1980's but computers and graphics were still a bit "clunky" and in their early stages. There was no IBM Compatible home computers then but there were a lot of companies who had their own OS and their own version of BASIC. Yeah...fun and interestion times.

I still dabble a bit but no, I'm not a programmer. You?

I guess "dabbling" would be a word for it (english isn't my mother tongue). When I was 8, an Amstrad CPC464 appeared under 1986' christmas tree. I entered print "bonjour", it answered "bonjour", and bang, I was contaminated :) I like all kinds of programming languages, especially esoteric ones, but I never do big projects. I'm addicted to AI, but you already know that. You must be a little bit older than me.

Going back to the topic, I'd like to do something.

I like Toki Pona and simple conlangs, I'm interested in Buddhism, I've just made a minimalist chatbot engine (here on your forum), and I love AI. All these things must lead somewhere.

French? Perhaps you know of our member here, Claude who post many entertaining iClone videos.

I took two years of French in school and for some reason I still remember a great deal of it.

Well, to help put things in perspective, in 1986, I already had two children 9 & 12. ;)

I was one of the original owners of a TRS-80 Model I computer, 4K or RAM, black and white monitor and we wrote programs in RS Basic and loaded and saved them From and to casette tapes!!
Yeah...it was THAT bad and yet so new and so good. (that was 1979-1980 era).

I've been hooked on AI and robotics since I was a youngster / teen. Love reading books and eBooks about AI and such.

It's all good! (at least until the robots take over!)

Salute!

Oh they won't take over... (although the recent movie with Johnnie Depp was pretty scary).

Yes I live in Bergerac, where we make very good wine. Maybe someday you'll drink a bottle which comes from where I live ;)

I'm leaving the forum for a few weeks... I'll come back in september probably. You're a kind person. Good bye, take care!
