How do we avoid robot dystopia? Scientists, including Stephen Hawking, have signed an open letter advising how to stay in control as machines get smarter.

They're happy to get their names about I am sure.

I might add that we were talking about things like this here nearly ten years ago.

We have to be careful about this matter. It is easy to represent this problem as an unsolvable one when talking to people who does not have a clue about AI (but saw a few movies about it). I can imagine small protests saying "AI will kill us" with furious people that are about to lynch the first programmer they see.

But that is not the way. This problem has to be considered with cold head, to lay down specific dangers to find solutions for them. There is too much to gain with AI (just think of new cures to diseases and that is just a beginning) in the contrast of staying ignorant.

I had a funny thought that programmers could be the new profession to take over 'lawyers'  that everyone hates,    because of too much glitchy automation. :)

That's funny it's working fine here.

Probably the worst thing a coder can say.  ;D

Believe or not bad news some times is better publicity then good news. I don't think any one is going to lynch us. I wish some of the programmers that have been around for awhile were not backing off because now is the time it getting popular again. There are lots of chat bot apps in the google play store for example. New domestic robots are being built and what do robots need? AI.

Yes, our very own smart phones have now superceded the home computer based desktop software assistants in their knowledge base, power, speed and location based GPS skills. They can do practically everything we can imagine them to do and hopefully some more ideas we simply haven't yet thought up! Provide SMS, email, alarms, reminders, appointments, shopping lists, weather alerts, traffic (conditions, quickest routes, accidents, etc.), reservations, take out or take away orders, distance, speed, heart rate, photos, calendars, games and so much more! Oh yes, you can even use one to actually TALK to someone if desired!!  ::)
Yes, some even have cute avatars for a visual focal point for those that want them. Some others are personable, witty, humorous, matter-of-fact and quirky.

It's not your father's AI assistant any more!
In the world of AI, it's the thought that counts!
