You can just ask me not to reply to you, that's no problem with me. I'll assume this by default.

This seems like a storm in a teacup to me.

Don merely gave a run down of current thinking and techniques - none of it seemed like he was talking down to anyone - I don't know why you took offence in the first place Demon. Often when people don't know each other very well they may end up writing about things others may already have knowledge of. It happens all the time and is to be expected.

Data is right, there is no way to ignore people other than to not read their posts - it's a warts and all thing. Just be nice to each other is our rule of thumb.

My account of it:

To be honest I am elderly so a lot of stuff I have forgotten how to do. I am also finding myself running into road blocks in my mind and am finding myself getting distracted easily and my mind wandering. So it is harder to learn new things.
The thing about using Stanford's Parser is that you're going to have to learn to program.
Frankly considering the fact that the way my mind works now, resembles adhd more then any thing else i think i do a damn good job of learning new things.
Frankly i am getting fed up with the patient little verbal indulgent pats on the head because people think i am new.
*insert tactless response*

I will further add that website coding and AIML work quite different from working with programming languages. That is not only my experience but also a "mindblowing experience" according to many programmers' accounts of their early days. My colleague, who creates websites for a profession, doesn't even want to try and wrap his head around programming.

I am glad this was apparently initiated off the AiDreams board, because that is a perfect excuse not to take sides.  I really don't want to take sides, between two excellent contributors to AiDreams.

Raven started a very popular topic which makes for good reading on AiDreams.  And Don gave us an extensive contribution of over seven hundred and fifty words to add to the popluarity of  this AiDreams topic authored by Raven.

Aside from the contention, I enjoyed reading this interesting AiDreams thread.  Is there any possibility of continuing this discussion which Raven authored without appearing insensitive to the heated disagreement with Don?

Ideas aside and generally speaking, if you're (not you in particular but you in the general sense of anyone interested in or affected by) going to venture into Robots or Chatbots, you're going to have to learn programming in one fashion or another. There!
You is that sometime odd word that is the second person pronoun...the person addressed, but often used when speaking (or typing) to a group as "you all". "You need to craw before you walk." Not meant to single any one person or individual.

Yes, English is sometimes easy to pick up but a lifetime to master the subtle nuances, innuendo, slang and ever changing usage.

Don't even compare same words with different countries and those same words mean completely different things!
Auugghhh! English! Bonnet, Lift, flat, and so on....

So it is with chatbots...different languages and methods for different people and for different intended uses for said bots.
Perhaps there is no one perfect language or methodology. It depends on the intended result and what's best suited for the programmer. There are many roads to the final goal and many ways to travel there.
In the world of AI, it's the thought that counts!

Any disagreement which follows is in a friendly tone.  I find it common that, website coders and programmers have one thing in common... They tend to specialize in their respective comfort zones, and may avoid expanding their skillsets to the latest technologies.  Again, but this is said without putting specialization down in any way.  It is good to have an expert programmer, or an expert web coder, on the team.  I know because, I've been the team leader of both in my career.

Don, the lines between website coding and programming have blurred.  RiveScript for example, works brilliantly as website coding because it supports a JavaScript version which converts AIML.  The result is Dr. Wallace's ALICE running 99% in website coding.  JAIL is extraordinary A.I. in JavaScript.  Someone emulated a whole Linux box in JavaScript with typed arrays.  And there are other major developments...  HTML5 website coding, in particular has a canvas which is mindblowing in terms of website coding.  Last but not least, Flash with its ActionScript is still  amazing, though falling in popularity it seems.

Is website coding more powerful than programming?  No, not yet.  But it takes quite a bit of effort to reach the limits of website coding.  In other words, an advanced A.I. research project, like Arckon, or ChatScript may be better suited for C++ programming because it is lighting fast, compared to website coding, which may time out and stall the website during intensive processing.

I consider Javascript and Flash actionscript to be programming languages, as opposed to html and xml style coding. My point isn't that one is better than another, but that a person who has mainly worked with one will lack experience with the other, and programming languages are considered to have a steep learning curve. At least, that's what my teachers told me.

Yes, Don... I see what you mean, they are both markup languages.

However, in my opinion, HTML5 mixes everything together now.

With HTML6 on the horizon, things are changing fast...

Seems HTML is on track to be like a "programming language"

replacing JavaScript with XML.

HTML6 proposed code: See: "<FIXTURES lang=“xml”>"
