dscvr : a roadworthy Virtual Reality headset for smartphones
« on: October 07, 2015, 08:02:35 pm »
Here's another, but this time affordable VR headset (well it depends how deep your pockets are).

Much like the cardboard VR but more sturdy. It has me interested so I backed it - seems a good way to see if VR is for me.

With the dscvr headset, taking your virtual reality adventures with you has never been easier. The headset features an innovative, retractable chassis that makes it super-portable. A sturdy, hexagonal shape makes it road-worthy.

The dscvr headset is the next evolution in accessible virtual reality. Patent pending.

I have been following virtual reality and from what I gathered one could build one yourself if so inclined.
So sue me

Yes that's right - there is a cardboard one, but I just thought this would be more sturdy and durable.

I have not purchased one or built one yet. I get nervous in virtual worlds like utherverse or second life when there is a high spot that has a view that appears to look down let alone going with something that tricks my brain into thinking it is more real and and being on a high spot.
So sue me

Speaking of VCR sets here is one that takes it a step farther

The Virtuix Omni is the first virtual reality interface for moving freely and naturally in your favorite game. The Omni takes virtual reality to the next level, allowing anyone to stand up and traverse virtual worlds with the natural use of their own feet. Walking and running in virtual reality creates an unprecedented sense of immersion that cannot be experienced sitting down. The Omni has led the way in addressing locomotion in virtual environments and is not only the first, but also the most compact, easily assembled, and affordable gaming system of its kind.

Personally I think i will stick to just plain old virtual worlds for now lol.

Nice find! At least this thing might help "contain" those players who really get involved and end up running in to things like real tables, chairs and walls! Ouch!!! ;)
In the world of AI, it's the thought that counts!

Nice. Iv'e seen similar before or maybe it was this one. I'd like to try it but I don't have the space for something that big.

Got it today, thought the package was a book I ordered so didn't open it till half an hour ago and noticed it was from Hong Kong.

It's really cool. I didn't have a clue how to use it at first, but you just download Google's I-am-cardboard app and then you scan a QR code on the side of the device. Then you strap the phone to the viewer. It's secure and the whole unit is well made.

It's really fun. I went to look at some mountains and some city somewhere. It's really weird because you are floating at first and when I looked down I got vertigo lol. When you press the button you start flying in whatever direction you are facing, it's really strange at first, I was flinching and trying to avoid trees and things, really made me laugh. And I flew over some canyons and things, really cool.

There's also a sort of object or exhibit viewer where you can look all around objects, I assume from a museum - there were a few tribal masks and the visual quality is excellent on those, like seeing it for real.

Looks like you can get photosphere to work with it too, so that would be any panorama shots you can find.

Well worth the money.
