Hello,
I'm studying a Bsc(Hons) Computer science hoping to specialise in Artificial Intelligence.
I've only just started an AI module in 3rd year and i absolutely love it.
Started writing my blog about AI and all the things i have learnt so far through my course and the media
lburski.blogspot.com
Can't wait to start getting into deep discussions.

 :)

Hi Lavinia,

Welcome to ai-dreams.

I had a look at what you've written in your blog and it looks like you are off to a good start. Regarding the fallibility of machines, don't forget that humans are fallible too. Which is worse, a machine that makes a mistake, or a human being that deliberately harms you, whether or not for its own gain?

Is there any particular branch of artificial intelligence that interests you the most?

Cheers,
Andrew Smith

Hi,
Thanks for the feedback!
Its great to know that it actually makes sense to other people. In answer to your question i think that a machine making a mistakes and the human deliberately harming you are both as bad as eachother if the computer is "intelligent" enough. However i do see your point as humans being fallible too as the machine must of been made by a human therefore because of that humans negligence, the machine made the mistake.

Ive only just started looking into AI and never realised it was so broad but if i had to pick my favourtie it would either be knowledge representation or machine learning. I can't pick between the two at this early stage.

Hi Lavinia,

No doubt you're familiar with the works of Isaac Asimov on the subject of machines, human beings and fallibility, collectively titled "I, Robot". One of the things most often quoted from those stories is "The Three Laws of Robotics" which you can look up if you haven't come across it already. However the whole point of his stories was that you could not define a simple set of rules to govern behaviour, whether human or machine. There was also (to my mind, though others may disagree) a very good science fiction movie based on his stories that was made quite recently.

If you are interested in "knowledge representation" and "machine learning", then you might also be interested in combining the two fields into "knowledge acquisition". There are a few of us (myself included) who are working in this area. Most of our posting is done over at chatbots.org which is another extremely useful website for artificial intelligence enthusiasts and professionals, although with a somewhat narrower focus than this excellent site. I am currently working on an analysis of the YAGO2 knowledge base and attempting to redesign it to make it more efficient and useful on readily available computers, rather than the "supercomputers" that it tends to require at the moment.

Cheers,
Andrew Smith

Hehe, I accidentally forgot to copy the first letter of the web-address and arrived on some Polish (I think) blog.

By the way, Hi from me too.

Welcome to Ai Dreams Lavinia :)

You will find some equally clever people here to discuss things with.

Infurl mentions chatbots.org too which a lot us frequent (thanks for the compliment btw Andrew) and like he says it is a bit more strict over there.  We can go off a tangents on this forum ;)

I'm a little jealous that you can get into AI with your degree course.  When I was at university it was only an 'on demand' course and not enough people were interested. Oh the error of their ways.

Enjoy your stay.

Tangents? Tangents?!

There was a young man named 'Bright'
who traveled much faster than light.
He left one day in a relative way,
and returned the previous night!
------------------------------
I think that NOT to be a tangent but
perhaps a circle or a figure eight type
of vortex through a multi-dimensional
time warp or something similar.

OK...maybe he just went off on a tangent! :idiot2: ;)

Sorry, Lburski, Welcome to our site and may all your explorations in
'Artificial' Intelligence be quite real!!  ;)

In the world of AI, it's the thought that counts!

Hello Lavinia :)
Nice blog You have there. Knowledge is amazing thing, isn't it? As we all thinking through grammatic predicates, subjects, objects, ..., I was wandering can there be another way of communication, more efficient than current language form. If there is, how difficult would be to convince people to use it instead of their native language? I bet it has to be a superset of current language form.
