My name is Shaquil, and I'm an American Computer Science student. My background is just a little 2D game programming. I'm really excited about AI, but I'm worried it's far too academic at this point. For me, the dream is for there to one day be a robot or AI as smart as a human being, although I know that's probably hundreds of years off. We barely understand the human brain well enough to map it all out, let alone recreate it. But that's what excites me and makes me want to contribute.

You need to view some of Ray Kurzweil's videos. You might very well change your expected timeline with regard to computers, AI and robotics.
You can find a lot of his talks about the Singularity on YouTube. It's closer than you think!

Also, don't worry too much about mapping and emulating the brain. The aeroplane was only developed once aircraft designers gave up on recreating the flapping wings of birds.
