Mixing it up!
« on: November 24, 2012, 06:14:54 am »
Hello AI Dreams Community!

My name is Carson, a senior(ish) in aerospace engineering at the University of Southern California.  I've been really trying to work my way into the realm of computer science, specifically AI, and how it can relate to spacecraft, UAVs, and robotics.  I've worked primarily in space systems, building cubsats, a "lunar lander", software development for US ground-based sensors, and satellite diagnosis.  As well, I've been a captain on USC's AeroDesign Team (which placed second the year I was captain at the Cessna/Raytheon sponsored AIAA Design Build Fly competition), and am currently the VP and Co-Founder of the USC branch of Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI).  I'm currently looking at future internships in the field of AI, and recently interviewed for a position working with swarm UAVs (fingers crossed!) and am hoping to do a Phd in the field.  So, I'm very excited to have happened upon this site, and any advice that comes to mind that you think might be helpful (be it potential grad schools, programs, or companies) I would absolutely love to hear it!

Hi cvogt26.

From reading your post I think you might be little over qualified for us, we are really just a bunch of amateurs interested in Ai, well I know I am  :) . Of course you are very welcome to be here and contribute to the site, someone with your background could be an asset to us all.

Thanks for introducing yourself and welcome to Dreams.

Freddy: Thank you! I hope it didn't come across as over-the-top, certainly wasn't my intention.  I've kind of gotten into the habit of just putting it all out there thanks to all the applications and emails I've been sending out to potential professors/programs.

Data: In terms of AI, I am still very much a novice.  I've had some opportunities to hear some great speakers and attend events like GECCO (Genetic and Evolutionary Computing Conference), but very little in terms of practice.  Either way! I'm sure there is plenty for me to learn here, and would love to contribute :)  I figure it helps you learn by simply taking the time to explain things, though I do prefer to listen.

squarebear: Thank you for the heads up! I'll definitely check out his profile, and potentially send him a message to see what sort of work he's involved with.  Thanks for including the link as well!

Bragi: Hello! thank you for the welcome :)

Not at all over the top; from my point of view it's nice when new members give some details like this.  I think it helps everyone assess whereabouts on the page everyone is - some people are just starting, others very advanced and so on.  Plus it's just interesting to know something about who one is talking to.
