MUDders? MUSH? MOO? Mmmmm?
« on: June 04, 2007, 02:49:43 am »
Just wonderin' if anyone on here would admit to liking those old text based MUDs. I like the thought of havin' AI run around preprogrammed rooms, with preprogrammed objects to manipulate and other mobs (ai)/players being put into a simular enviornment to interact with each other. Not just the hack and slash ones but the ones that have an economy run like a 24 hr sim with AI that develope prejudgedices with players and other mobs of certain traits and/or features. just curious..

I know the kind of thing you mean but personally I go for MMORPG's like Guild Wars and the new Lord Of The Rings Online.   I know a lot of people are still into what they now call 'interactive literature' but as for the AI side of it I have not come across anything like what you describe although I don't doubt there is something out there.

dig. I feel the AI in some of the text based are better. I don't know if the graphical muds have the emotes worked in or not, I never play them. I think it allows for more interaction with them by bein' able to type out VERB-NOUN, VERB-ADJECTIVE, VERB-NOUN-ADJECTIVE and VERB-NOUN-CONTAINER actions with a longer list of possible conbinations that could affect the room, objects and mobs/players..on a good mud.

There is a stock area that are in alotta muds, I believe it's called "Gang-land" (I'm sure there are several offshoots) where your character wanders through a neighborhood slum area of warring mobs where the mobs kill each other when they meet and the patrol will counter them in the middle. Some areas are better than others..think most of them attack your character if you sleep unless your near a patrolman. Some steal from you when they can. Some muds I think mobs will call out to another in the area or even attack your character just for havin' the same traits as a recent or common attacker..

I think legendmud has an area that is designed to have a running ecomony with mafia types as well. I think the currency is pretty much set to flow with shopkeeps and couriers. They also have an ancient ireland area with some pretty interactive mobs, hehe. Might not be sure who you are talking to there. Not all so much hack-n-slash.

I heard about some games I believe it was from an AI topics military listing for training that looked more graphical. To train people to speak foreign languages fluently with the right ettiquette within 6 months and help train soldiers and such with weapons to help give them a better idea of how big of an area their rounds will explode and such "to minimize friendly casualties". Haven't got to play these yet. Think it was part of their Future Combat

A lot of the graphical MMORPG's have emotes built in, Lord of the Rings Online even emotes based on what you type...so for example if you type 'LOL' your character will laugh, or if you type 'How do we get there?' your character will gesture with open arms and look quizzical.

The gansters game reminds me of an old Play By Mail game (anyone else remember those) that I used to play called 'Its a Crime'...you were a boss over some ganglands and you had to go round terrorising blocks, burning things and robbing places...lol, I dont think the term 'Political Correctness' had been invented back then, but I turned out alright imho...

Heres a couple of screenys from LOTRO...both me and Maviarab play..
