Title: Another Robotic Assistant / Butler

Don't be surprised if you receive a package at your hotel door delivered by a robot instead of a human.
At least in this hotel...

Now I may be an A.I. researcher and robotics enthusiast but I still find those robots creepy. Maybe it's because their actuators make sounds that seem extremely unnatural to us and as a result, also seems suspicious (which may further cause fear or similar emotions).

Also, why does it have to sound like R2-D2?

P.S. No cute maid to flirt with when she comes to your room? Boo...

Not to put down the Aloft Hotel. I'll try to keep an open mind. But, yeah, my impression was I could never eat food, or use a towel, that came out of that thing.  If robots make people lazy, then it is likely unsanitary, which describes my gut feeling.  Identifying what makes robots creepy is useful discussion.   I mean the technology is fantastic, but how can we reduce the creepiness which is so common in all sorts of robots?

Well you can't generalize 'creepy' IMO, since one might find a human-like robot creepy while others might find abstractly-shaped robots creepy. I don't believe there will be too much unison in that discussion however we could all probably agree that the sounds made by the robots (in general) are in the very least - distracting (if not eerie).

Also I don't like the aspect of slave robots in general. Also dislike the idea of having people do the jobs at home (dishes, cleaning...) instead of you. I have discussed this a few replies back so I will avoid repeating myself but just remember that if you are physically well, do try to do your own chores - it can be rewarding.

They don't really become Creepy until they look like one's Ex-Spouse!! Then it's time to RUN! :2funny:
