Robotic Geodesic Fish Farms for Deep-Ocean Aquaculture

An MIT
press release described a joint project with Ocean Farm
Technologies, Inc. to develop the next generation of aquaculture. The
result is a 62 foot diameter geodesic dome that is shark-proof and
self-propelled. Large, slow moving propellers move the dome as needed
and also keep the water moving through the enclosure to assure
sufficient oxygen levels for the fish. Traditional aquaculture techniques
rely on anchored cages near the shore. Using the new self-propelled
domes, vast areas of deep ocean would become available for fish farming.
For more see the MIT Sea Grant
News article and video
of new fish farming pods. There is also a Mass
High Tech article on the system.
