Robots for Humanity
14 July 2011, 7:11 pm

Our friends at Willow Garage wrote to tell us about their latest initiative, called Robots for Humanity. This project is being done jointly with the Healthcare Robotics Lab at Georgia Tech. Here's the scoop:
the initiative revolves around Henry and Jane Evans. Henry Evans is a mute quadriplegic, having suffered a stroke 10 years ago. His movements are limited to the use of a single finger and slight movement of his head.  With just this, he is able to operate a computer. Last year, Henry caught a TV interview of Georgia Tech Professor Charlie Kemp showing research with the Willow Garage PR2 robot. Willow Garage and Professor Kemp were contacted by Henry shortly afterwards, and have been collaborating since then.
For more, watch the video above and check out the more in depth description of the project over at the Willow Garage blog.

Super! Really great report, Tyler!

Robots will become more in demand in our near future for all kinds of activities.
Assistants, tutors, nursemaids, cleaning, security, automation, etc. One day their
numbers will be similar to households with a TV.
