Robot Recruits Students for University of Toledo

A Toledo
Blade article describes the newest member of the University of
Toledo's undergraduate admissions recruiting team. It's a White
Box Robotics 914 PC-BOT, modified by Ted Ronau, that "looks a bit
like R2-D2 from Star Wars
films. But UT's version has a 19-inch monitor attached that displays an
avatar modeled after Mr. Ronau's colleague, Roy Schneider, the manager
of medical illustration at UT." For more details of the
modifications, see the 914
Large Monitor Project article that appeared last year on the 914 PC
BOT website. Ted is already thinking about a new version of the robot
that would have more capabilities and be built by students as part of an
engineering course.

Interesting, but the R2 D2 never did excite me.
Now if the university could set set up couple of these, and looking much more human, (perhaps a male and female) then the world would take note.

It looks a bit wierd having that large monitor on top, having seen more lifelike robots it's hard not to think that this got thrown together pretty quickly.  Having said that though I imagine the same kind of thing is possible but using UltraHal as the display instead.
