Robots: Robot-Assisted Surgery

The latest episode of the Robots
Podcast takes a closer look at tele-operated surgery. Rainer
Konietschke from the German Aerospace Centre DLR (which built the android
Justin)
presents the latest prototype of their MiroSurge robot. The
goal of the robot is to assist surgeons with the cramped conditions in
endoscopic (also called "keyhole") surgery, which is becoming more and
more popular due to its numerous advantages over open surgery. MiroSurge does
this by giving surgeons 6 degrees of freedom inside a patient. It also
provides force feedback and gives doctors a 3-dimensional view of the
interior of the operating area. Our second guest, Woung Youn Chung from the Yonsei University
College of Medicine in Seoul, Korea, has just developed a novel method to treat patients with thyroid cancer
using endoscopic surgery with another robotic system, the Da Vinci Medical
Robot. Tune in!
