Singapore Underwater Robotic Olympiad 2009

60 teams from 40 secondary schools competed in the very first
Singapore
Underwater Robotic Olympiad yesterday at the Sports
Complex swimming pool of Republic Polytechnic. The goal of each team was
to design the best underwater robot. In addition to the main
competition, there were water robot side shows with the intriguing
titles of "Hip Hop Striders", and "Dancing Jelly Fishes". Demonstrations
of sumo robots and humanoid robots were also included in the event. The
winning team, pictured above, was from Bedok South Secondary School. The
contest organizers hope the event will "cultivate an interest among the
young to pursue research and development in underwater robotics, and
bring about innovative applications such as the commercial use of robots
for environmental cleaning or surveillance purposes".
