VODER (1939) - Early Speech Synthesizer

Thought this was interesting, better than I thought it would be for the age...

Considered the first electrical speech synthesizer, VODER (Voice Operation DEmonstratoR) was developed by Homer Dudley at Bell Labs and demonstrated at both the 1939 New York World's Fair and the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition. Difficult to use and difficult to operate, VODER nonetheless paved the way for future machine-generated speech.

Until recently, something like last 10 years, all speech synthesis was basically done the same way as in the video by using basic sounds tones fully generated by a synthesizer, 100% synthetic.

Now voices are samples of real voices that get put through a synthesizer to pitch bend for expression.

Although the new voices sound better I can’t help but think we have gone backwards in some way.

Nice find...very cool even for dated technology. Hey it was a lot better than a string and a couple of tin cans. (anyone remember those)?

In the world of AI, it's the thought that counts!
