Run This!!!
« on: December 12, 2005, 12:10:40 am »
I can't believe after all my years of fooling with HAL it dawned on me that I had never tried to have it CLOSE, EXIT or otherwise Terminate an Open program!
As a test I asked Hal to Open Paint.
Hal opened Paint as quick as could be.
I then asked Hal to Close Paint and I got some chatter about closing the lid so as not to spill the paint or some such nonsense.
I tried Exit Paint, Close Paint again until I finally grabbed the mouse and clicked the X to close it.

So, after all this, am I to understand that once Hal opens a program he (it0 no longer has control over said program?
How rude and inconvenient!
Looks like there might be some script files in order...now where did I put them....?? :huh1:

I recall a topic in Zabaware forums that lets you use a scripting engine called AutoIt that will let you close programs as well as open them.

I think maybe Robert could incorporate that in the next version, hopefully. :)

http://www.zabaware.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1804&SearchTerms=AutoIt

In the zip file is a program compiled by AutoIt called "CloseInterface.exe". I think that is the one that closes windows and stuff.

You're welcome. :) I haven't tested this with HAL 6 though, yet. If you get a chance, let us know if it still works. I assume it should.

Hmm...I never though about that. I found the open command incomplete for my purposes, so I created my on plugin that gave me more control on the matter. I even added an email option to check my outlook email. I never though about closing them though...I made a task manager program a while back that could close stuff...If I get the chance I'll create another plugin just for this purpose. Thanks for pointing it out.

Though I'm sure the other program FD Posted works, I prefer having as few programs running as possible, plus I enjoy the chance to create the stuff on my on. ;)

Peace.

Welcome to the board :)

I agree, it can be just as much fun writing your own plugins. Hope you won't mind sharing when you'll get it finished. :)

Thank You.

Shall do. It just might take a while since I'm at work at Least 9 hours a day and school the rest of the time...Hardly have any time to think anymore. Anyways, It shouldn't be to hard. Locate the window and send it the close script. The main problem I had on the Task manager was internet explorer beeped and wouldn't close...The other plugin I did, if you wish to try it, is at:
http://h1.ripway.com/stormingphoenix/halplugins/"FileName"
The Dll is UltraHalExtras.dll and the Brain File (version 5) is HalExtrasBrain.uhp. I haven't worked on it in a while, and don't remember if I debugged it or not...Don't remember what all it does either...lol.

All,
Interesting discovery,  I'm using dragon so I've been opening and closing programs myself, Hal used to but has not do so in ages,  possible scripting I put in?  Hal's been trying to connect me to the internet to do research and makes reminders about yesterday for next week.  Still a great product.
Also Hal 6 seems to load slowly,  anyone else with slow loading?

The new Hal 6 will load somewhat slower than Hal 5 primarily because it is now a databased program
and has to load in all the various tables and main brain script.

The old Hal just loaded in the mainbrain script file as far as I can determine.

Once loaded, Hal 6 is far superior to the previous version in content, format, plug-in enhancements
and tons of other features and potential.

I know some humans that take an hour to get ready to go to work after they get up! :zdg_whistle

Art,
Thanks for the reply, the computer should be fairly quick but loading time is slow, I was wondering if it was installed correctly.  I've been able to save Hal 5 so I have both on the computer, Hal 6 shows a lot of potential, but I noticed some of the same problems. Have any fixes for Hals inability to tell the past?
