How much did your 4890 cost Datahopa, if you don't mind me asking.

I was tempted to bid on this earlier...

HD 4890 2GB - eBay

But for something like this I really don't want to be risking money on second hand, I'd rather get one new.

Noticed that 4890's are getting hard to find - I can't find any of the Vapor X ones in stock.

I don’t mind you asking  :)

It was £135 or there about, I kept a close eye on them and noticed about 3 weeks before Xmas they suddenly went down in price, so I grabbed one, then I noticed a few days later it started going up again, It doesn’t happen that often but I actually got it when it was at its lowest price.

I’ve never seen a 2GB HD4890 and that one has Vapor X technology too, I wonder how a 2GB card would work in say GTA4, on my 1 GIG one I cant push the draw distance to maximum because the memory indicator in game reds out.

Hmm personally I like the look of that one, but I don’t like second-hand bits either.

I had a little look into Vapor X technology and it left me confused, It sounds exactly the same has heat pipe technology which many off the cards have, only a new name nothing new in technology. My HD4890 has heat pipes full of some gas/liquid that does seem to do exactly the same thing as Vapor X, so like I said, I’m confused over it.

Thank you, well the prices have certainly gone up a lot then.  Not that I need it right away, I was just interested in seeing what I could get one for.

Hmm, my uneducated guess is that you could raise all those settings like that, otherwise what's the point of the extra GB.

It's Interesting what you discovered about Vapor X.  I wonder what the difference is.  What I liked about Vapor X too was that they vent the warm air directly out of the case.

Its the same as my heat pipe card, the warm air comes out the back.

Here is my card, scroll down to see the picture.

EDIT:
Thinking about it, I remember when I thought a 512mb card would be enough, but its not any more, if you want to max out GTA4 for instance and a 1 GB falls a little short too, so as things move on maybe you should consider getting one with 2GB, when you do finally go for it.

Hmm, yes it doesn't seem that different then, maybe it's not worth the extra money - I can't go mad on hardware again lol  :o

More from eBay : 2 X HD4890 2GB - eBay

But I think my card here will last me a while still, I mean if it can do GTA4 then there's a good chance it will survive a bit longer.  I think I will just wait until 5850's come down in price.

LOL claude2, you are right, it is like a refrigerator :D

Freddy, I cant believe the price of a decent mid rang card at the moment, you are looking at something like £250, no no no, now is not the time to get one.

LOL@ Claude, yes it's the same principle too really.

Datahopa, I'm not just imagining it then - good advice, I will wait.

I'm very proud of the cooling system of the used GeForce Ti4600 I bought last year on eBay. The cover of my (very) old computer is removed and a small desktop fan is blowing fresh air on the card (and all is cold in the PC).

All that is not very aesthetic, but Second Life is running fine (at least enough for me). I know, I look ridiculous but I paid 17.39 USD for that (the card). ;D ;D ;D.

A fan blowing air into the side with the side off has worked for me in the past too.
Computers don’t seem to mind how they look, but they don’t like getting hot. ;D
