For one thing, it serves to make the AI more humanlike. If it is to exist in a human world and survive, how best then for it to be able to have "dreams", recounting its memories of things, conversations and events that transpired during a particular day, much like we do but with far more detail and degree of processing.

It could use these dreams, memories to help it in many constructive ways, unlike its human counterparts who can barely remember or recall a single dream. The process or ability would prove very interesting, the say the least.

At least, that's my take...
In the world of AI, it's the thought that counts!
