SMSS Gets a Few Upgrades
1 August 2011, 1:57 pm

Lockheed-Martin's Squad Mission Support System (SMSS) gets an upgrade!  The SMSS is the largest autonomous vehicle to be deployed with infantry at about 11 feet long.   Designed to support soldiers on the ground the SMSS aids in lugging around heavy equipment and supplies.  Originally the SMSS made its debut in 2005, it now has upgrades such as both remote control and autonomous mode and can carry up to a half a ton of equipment.  Several autonomous modes have been added such as way points, follow me, and come to me modes while also avoiding obstacles as it navigates.  Navigation consists of using GPS, Lidar and other sensors to follow an operator and to detect and avoid obstacles.  Additional packages could be added for surveillance, reconnaissance, and target acquisition.  It just shows that future wars look like they will be more robotic!  You should SMS your friends about this article that mentions the SMSS vehicle!
